Large Dominican Amber and Sterling Silver Necklace

This is a long necklace of naturally shaped large Dominican amber beads. The colors run from light gold to honey to reddish. There are lots of inclusions to be found inside including soil and pieces of wood. I could look inside these beads for hours as there really is a lot to see. You are literally looking at history as these beads are at least 25 million years old. These pieces have a greenish fluorescence to them which displays in natural light. It is best seen against a dark background. This necklace measures 26 inches long. It has been strung on 1 mm silk beading thread, and it closes with a sterling silver lobster clasp. Uniquely Beautiful Dominican Blue Amber Pendant

This pendant incorporates a very unique specimen of Dominican blue amber, which in itself is a very clear light yellow almost bordering on greenish. There are no inclusions inside although there are some interesting fractures found within. In sunlight this piece fluoresces a dramatic sky blue shade. This photo was taken indoors using an LED lamp for illumination. The color is quite striking, but sunlight would really bring out the blue tone.

Handcrafted in the Dominican Republic, this specimen is set in a heavy sterling silver bezel setting with sterling silver bail. The bezel incorporates rope style coining and has an ornate hammered finish. The pendant measures 1 inch tall (with bail) by just over 1/2 inch wide. I'm asking $50 for this piece with free shipping. Free shipping within USA only. International buyers contact me for a shipping rate.
A gorgeous rectangular cabochon of Dominican blue amber has been set in a heavy sterling silver rope bezel setting. Handcrafted in the Dominican Republic, this is one of the more interesting pieces of Dominican blue that I have encountered. The amber itself is a very light golden color with inclusions of soil and what appears to be plant material. This piece fluoresces a stunning ocean/royal blue color. This pendant measures one and one quarter inch high with bail by three quarters of an inch wide. The price is $50 with free shipping. Free shipping in USA only. Stunning Chiapas Amber Necklace

This is an astoundingly beautiful necklace made of rustic barrel-shape amber beads from the southern state of Chiapas, Mexico. The pictures posted here do not do it justice. The amber used in this necklace ranges in color from red, dark and light gold, and a very pale yellow. All of these are loaded with various types of organic inclusions, mostly plant material. Each of these has a greenish blue fluorescence when exposed to light and the inclusions add to this effect, making the fluorescence stronger. I've added some close-up pictures of the beads showing some of their detail and fluorescence. All of these photos were taken in natural sunlight. This necklace is 24 inches long, strung on high quality silk beading thread, and it closes with a sterling silver clasp. The price for this beauty is $85 with free shipping. Free shipping within USA only. International buyers please contact me for a shipping rate.

Dominican Blue Amber and 14 Karat Gold Necklace

This beauty is an 18 inch necklace incorporating round and natural shaped beads of Dominican blue amber. 14 karat solid gold beads and a 14 karat solid gold clasp are used to complete the design. The picture above was taken in natural sunlight and the blue color is apparent, but the blue color can become much more intense.

The amber was obtained from the Dominican Republic and I hand drilled and polished each piece used in this necklace. This took several days and I learned a lot about drilling beads in the process as this was the first time I had ever done it. Then the beads were graded by size and I started working on the design, which by the way was changed several times. This design incorporates twenty seven round and eighteen naturally shaped beads of Dominican blue amber, complemented with twenty solid 14 karat gold beads and clasp. I was lucky and was able to find the round beads at an excellent price, probably the only time that will happen. I still see round beads of Dominican blue amber for sale, but they have become increasingly more expensive and are usually sold by the single bead. These beads have nice clarity, interesting organic inclusions, and a strong blue fluorescence.

A word about Dominican blue amber, which is in fact quite rare. It ranges in age from 25 to 30 million years old give or take a few million years or so. You can find it on the market but not in any kind of large quantity, and it is highly valued by collectors. The Chinese have recently discovered it and there is a huge demand for it over there, and of course this demand has caused the price to rise quite a bit as of late. My supplier has seen the cost of blue amber increase 7 times during the five years he has been selling it. The amber itself is not blue, it looks like regular amber, generally a lemon yellow to dark honey color with or without organic inclusions such as soil and plant material. Strangely enough insects are actually very rare in blue amber for some strange reason. The blue color is a fluorescence in the amber which is brought on by sunlight or some other source of lighting, and it is best seen against a dark background. The blue can be subtle or very striking in both intensity and shade depending on the particular piece. Another interesting tidbit is that blue amber actually smells different from other amber when it is being worked. I noticed this while drilling and polishing, and I can tell which pieces are going to be blue just by the distinct fragrance. It is a sweet and very pleasant almost floral scent.
